The echinda or otherwise known as spiney
anteater is a primitive egg-laying MAMMAL,
or MONOTREME, of New Guinea, East Australia,
and Tasmania. Covered with sharp guills,
the grayish-brown echidna projects itself
by rolling into a ball. It may reach 18in
(46cm) in length. A rapid burrower, the
echidna probes for ants and termites with its
sensitive muzzle and long sticky tongue.
