  1. The echinda or otherwise known as spiney
  2. anteater is a primitive egg-laying MAMMAL,
  3. or MONOTREME, of New Guinea, East Australia,
  4. and Tasmania. Covered with sharp guills,
  5. the grayish-brown echidna projects itself
  6. by rolling into a ball. It may reach 18in
  7. (46cm) in length. A rapid burrower, the
  8. echidna probes for ants and termites with its
  9. sensitive muzzle and long sticky tongue.
